Effects of gamma irradiation on instream leaf litter decomposition

چکیده
Abstract Leaf litter decomposition is a key process in stream ecosystems, the rates of which can vary with changes quality or its colonization by microorganisms. Decomposition streams increasingly used to compare ecosystem functioning globally, often requiring distribution across countries. It important understand whether sterilization, required some countries, alter and associated processes. We examined sterilization gamma irradiation (25 kGy) influenced rates, stoichiometry, invertebrates after weeks instream incubation within coarse-mesh fine-mesh litterbags. nine plant species from three families that varied widely chemistry but found mostly consistent responses, no differences numbers at end period. However, stoichiometry differed between irradiated control litter, greater nutrient losses (mostly phosphorus) former. Therefore, effects on should be taken into account studies focused not necessarily those least experimental timescale considered here.

Background: The approaches chosen for control of Outbreaks of infectious diseases in Aquatic farming industry include improvement of environmental conditions, stocking of specific pathogen free (SPF) brood stockings, and application of vaccines and immunostimulants. Despite numerous studies on the effects of Ergosan on immune system of aquatic animals, there is no data available on ant...
متن کاملLeaf Litter Mixtures Alter Microbial Community Development: Mechanisms for Non-Additive Effects in Litter Decomposition
To what extent microbial community composition can explain variability in ecosystem processes remains an open question in ecology. Microbial decomposer communities can change during litter decomposition due to biotic interactions and shifting substrate availability. Though relative abundance of decomposers may change due to mixing leaf litter, linking these shifts to the non-additive patterns o...
متن کاملThe Effects of Fire Severity on Macroinvertebrate Detritivores and Leaf Litter Decomposition
High severity wildfire events are a feature of forests globally and are likely to be more prevalent with climate change. As a disturbance process, fire has the potential to change important ecological functions, such as decomposition, through its impact on biodiversity. Despite the recognised importance of decomposition in terms of fuel loads and energy flow, little is known about the post-fire...
متن کاملEffects of radionuclide contamination on leaf litter decomposition in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
The effects of radioactive contamination on ecosystem processes such as litter decomposition remain largely unknown. Because radionuclides accumulated in soil and plant biomass can be harmful for organisms, the functioning of ecosystems may be altered by radioactive contamination. Here, we tested the hypothesis that decomposition is impaired by increasing levels of radioactivity in the environm...
